When I see John C. Riley or Jonah Hill in a movie, I generally assume it will be pretty funny. Step Brothers. Superbad. You get the idea.
John (clever character naming for John C. Riley) has been divorced for 7 years. His ex and her fiancé drag John to a party where he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei). John C. Riley hooking up and dating someone like Marisa Tomei is a bit of a plot stretch to say the least.
The uncomfortableness starts when John meets Molly’s son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). Cyrus is in his early 20s and has an interesting relationship with his mother. Cyrus and John compete for Molly’s time and attention.
Cyrus is not the comedy I expected. At all. In fact, I’m not quite sure why it’s billed as a comedy. I laughed a few times. More at the awkwardness than anything else. Not that it’s a bad movie. Just not what I signed up for.
